How do I determine what kind of bat I should get?

The best way to determine this is to find out which bat feels comfortable in your hands. Their is no right or wrong size. Tony Gwynn used a 32.5" bat for most of his career. Contact hitter usually will use a shorter bat with a smaller barrel, while stronger power hitters tend to use a longer bat with a larger barrel. Remember, the larger the barrel, the greater tendency the bat will have to breaking, due to the density of the wood. Feel free to contact us by email, or at our toll free number for help in choosing a model and size. Carolina Clubs bats are right around a minus 2 or drop 2, which means for a bat that is 33 inches, the weight will be very close to 31 ounces, and a bat that is 34 inches will be very close to 32 ounces, and so on.

What is the difference between metal and maple wood bats?

The three biggest differences between wood, and metal or composite bats are one, the breakage, if wood bats are not used with the trademark up or down, they will have a tendency to break. Also, if a ball is hit off the end of the bat, or off the handle, the bat may break. The second difference is the size of the sweet spot, the sweet spot on a wood bat is smaller than an aluminum or composite bat, thus, hits that you get with an aluminum bat may be pop ups or fly out with a wood bat.  The flip side of that is that hitting with wood makes you a better hitter because it trains you to hit the ball on a specific part of the bat instead of just making contact anywhere on the barrel.  The third difference is the cost. A good maple bat sells for anywhere between $70 and $130, plus tax and/or shipping. On our website our bats sell for $67 and lower depending on the quantity purchased.  A good quality aluminum or composite bat starts around $150 and goes up to around $400!  So, even if you were to buy two or three good quality maple bats, and one or two should break, you will still be well under the cost of one composite bat.
